Lost in the California countryside

Four people that love one great gal and want to celebrate her upcoming year ran away to the California country for a few days... We went hiking in the redwoods, watched the sunrise through fog, collected treasure from the riverbed, drank California wine, drove by the ocean and all stared at the full moon. We saw a fox, watched eagles soar and made dinner together.  It was the best weekend I have had in a very long time. Cheers to Kelly and friendship.

Merry Christmas 2012!

I'm signing off for the rest of 2012. I'm looking forward to some much needed down time with Eric, Mom playing hymns on the piano with Grandpa singing along, camera geekiness with my brother, too much coffee with my Dad and long games of dominos all together. Incredibly blessed for another year with all of us under one roof.  Merry Christmas everyone. Email will be a bit delayed but looking forward to connecting in the new year!

The Unplanned | Half Moon Bay Photography

This day I was supposed to meet a sweet family with two little boys at Half Moon Bay for a family session. As the day progressed, the fog rolled in and rained us out. I was close to Half Moon Bay so decided to stop anyways, just for me.  I stopped for an hour with just me and my camera.  I want to do this more.  It quiets me enough to let the lens speak the things that my heart feels even for things I don't yet have words for. It was dreary, quiet and understated.  I sat on this bench and was just quiet. I didn't contemplate what I needed to do, new business plans, friendships or even love. I just was still.

Fine Art Botanic Fern

This week started my yearly class at Chicago Botanic Garden teaching Macro Photography in the greenhouse. It is always a welcome change of pace for me to communicate the technicalities of the camera, meet new students and spend some time away from the computer.  I wander with my class in the green humidity and it relaxes me deeply.  Here is one from this week.

Changing of Seasons | Personal.

This time of the year is always busy and as I began to write this little post I looked back to see what I was saying last year and it was more of the same.  It is the time in the season both in weather and the industry to start taking deeper breaths, slowing down to look around you and enjoy the changing of seasons.  I've arrived a bit early to sessions to be alone with my camera.  It helps me to be outside and to understand the changing of seasons. It settles somewhere deeply in me and helps my heart say " It is well". Here are a few frames from various outdoor wanderings.

Portrait of a Poppy | Fine Art Botanicals

My two photography portfolio classes have come to close for this Spring.  I taught 30 fine art botanic students searching for their own artistic voice at Chicago Botanic Garden.  It was a challenge for me to quiet myself enough from the fast paced wedding world to the silent subjects of nature.  This year especially it felt like a big jolt to my creative mind to shift and shoot in the quiet. For the first time ever, Chicago Botanic Garden is hosting a Student Photography Exhibition to show off the talent of my students. I am so excited!   Opening night is July 1 from 6-8pm with refreshments.  Eric and I will be there that evening if you'd like to come!  Please come and see what my students can do!

For those of you following this blog, you may remember my Portrait of a Ranunculus. Throughout this Spring season I have been shooting various flower species in a similar fashion with detail to the bottom of the flower supported by color and lines.

This is a Portrait of a Poppy.
